Important Tourist Spots and Temples in Sri Lanka

Muneeswaran Shivan Temple

Chilaw: 1 hour – Ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, a must-see place for Hindu pilgrims. Known for its very colorful festivals, it attracts several devotees who come here to take blessings for prosperity and health.

Manaveri Ramalingam Shivan Temple

Munneswaram: Another sacred place for Lord Shiva's disciples, Munneswaram is believed to be the first lingam installed and worshiped by Lord Rama. This spot is considered very important for the disciples.

Anuradhapura

An ancient city with some of the more imposing ruins of an ancient civilization, most of which are very well preserved. The city contains several prominent stupas, monasteries, and relics, such as the sacred Bodhi Tree, believed to be the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment.

Thiruketheeswaran Ramalingam Shivan Temple

One of the five ancient Ishwarams dedicated to Lord Shiva in Mannar. It is a place of rich cultural heritage and spiritual significance, attracting numerous devotees and tourists.

Jaffna

Nallur Kandaswamy Temple

This is amongst the most significant Hindu temples within Jaffna and is dedicated to Lord Murugan. This is famous for its grand architecture and the boisterous Nallur Festival, during which the Lord attracts devotees by thousands.

Naguleswaram Shivan Temple

Situated in Keerimalai, this is yet another ancient Ishwarams dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed to have natural healing powers, and the water from its wells attracts pilgrims searching for cures.

Thirukoneswaram Temple

This ancient temple at the highest point of Swami Rock in Trincomalee is dedicated to the mighty Lord Shiva. The legendary place offers a breathtaking view of the ocean.

Sigiriya Fort

A long-lost rock fortress declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Sigiriya is also called Lion Rock. Inside its premises, many frescoes, gardens, and a mirror wall that emit much information regarding the history of Sri Lanka are found.

Muthu Mari Amman Temple

Located in Matale, this temple is dedicated to the goddess Mariamman. It is famous for its annual festival, which is celebrated with many elaborate rituals done at the festival site and takes many devotees from all over the country.

Spice Garden in Matale

The Matale area is famous for its spice gardens, where interested parties learn about the growth and processing of various spices. These gardens have organized tours, and some allow visitors to purchase fresh spices.

Murugan Temple in Kandy

This shrine is dedicated to Lord Murugan and is a sacred pilgrimage place. It is situated in the beautiful city of Kandy, which itself is famous for its outstanding picturesque environment as well as the Temple of the Tooth Relic.

Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple

Nuwara Eliya
